GENERAL BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES OF THE EARTH RESOURCES DIVISION


  • Earth Resources Division of the RSAC-UP has undertaken and completed a number of Remote Sensing and GIS technique based projects. Some of the important projects completed by Earth Resources Division include creation of geospatial database of geomorphology and lineaments on 1:50,000 scale for entire Uttar Pradesh under National Geomorphology and Lineament Mapping Project. Natural Resources Information System Project, Phase-II for entire Uttar Pradesh The results of this study could be crucial inputs for surface and ground water management and for suitable site selection for civil engineering projects such as road / rail alignments /bridges and barrages and also for the geotechnical investigations, geoenvironmental analysis and geo-hazard studies including seismo-tectonic investigations in parts of Uttar Pradesh in the near future. Natural Resources Information System Project, Phase-II for entire Uttar Pradesh, mineral targeting studies in Lalitpur and Jhansi districts of Uttar Pradesh. Recently, Earth Resources Division completed the digital database creation work for two mining leases of Sonbhadra district on pilot basis using RS & GIS techniques. Earlier this Division also accomplished the task of Hydrogeomorphological mapping for all the districts of Uttar Pradesh on 1:250,000 scale under National Drinking Water Technology Mission Programme. The studies pertaining to channel configuration of major rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Ramganga, Rapti, Ghaghra in U.P and Brahmaputra River in Assam aimed at assessing the channel migration, bank erosion and consequent impact on existing and new infrastructure projects (such as bridges and gas pipelines etc) were also completed. Some other studies completed by this division include Ganga-Yamuna and Ganga-Ramganga confluence dynamics, geoenvironmental studies in Sonbhadra, Mahoba and Lalitpur districts, critical facility, infrastructure, urban density and landuse/landcover mapping for disaster risk reduction in and around Lucknow city and wetland mapping for entire Uttar Pradesh. Earth Resources Division has carried out landslide hazard zonation studies in parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim and also completed National.
  • Further Earth Resources Division is also working on Space Based Information Support for Decentralized Planning (SIS-DP) Project aimed at creation of digital database of landuse/landcover, infrastructure and slope themes on 1:10,000 scale for entire Uttar Pradesh. Further, the linkage of digital database of this project with legacy data and spatial and non-spatial data of stake holding departments is also proposed. 
  • Scientists of Earth Resources Division since its inception have so for published altogether 100 research papers/ science articles/abstracts in various international and national journals, hindi and english language science magazines and in proceeding and abstract volumes of international and national conferences. These include 15 research papers in peer reviewed international journals and 06 articles in ISSN numbered popular science magazines during past 10 years.
